South Mountain Reservation Hiking Guide: Best Trails, Parking and Tips

Quick answer: South Mountain Reservation is a 2,110-acre Essex County park in Maplewood, Millburn and West Orange, New Jersey, with miles of wooded trails less than an hour from Manhattan. Highlights include Hemlock Falls, the Washington Rock lookout with views toward the New York skyline, Turtle Back Rock, the Rahway River trails and the popular Fairy Trail. The yellow-blazed Lenape Trail links most of them.

About the reservation

Land for the reservation was bought from 1895, and the park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers landscape firm. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built many of its trails, stone footbridges and shelters, which you’ll still see today. The park runs along the ridges of the Watchung Mountains and also includes the Turtle Back Zoo and a dog park. Sources: Essex County Parks and Sue Adler.

The main trails

  • Lenape Trail (yellow blazes): a long-distance trail across Essex County, about 34 miles in total, which runs through the reservation and connects Hemlock Falls and other highlights.
  • Rahway River trail (white blazes): runs north from the Tulip Springs parking area beside the river toward South Orange Avenue.
  • Hemlock Falls Loop (red dot on white): the short loop around the falls.
  • Carriage roads: wide paths popular for jogging, cycling and cross-country skiing.

Washington Rock

During the Revolutionary War, a signal beacon stood here, one of a chain of beacons used by George Washington’s army to warn of British movements. Today it’s a lookout with views east toward Newark, Elizabeth, Staten Island and the Manhattan skyline on clear days.

Parking and access

  • Tulip Springs (Glen Avenue and Lackawanna Place area, Millburn): best for Hemlock Falls and the Rahway River trails.
  • Locust Grove (Millburn): near Millburn station; closed for construction in July 2026, so check status.
  • Train: NJ Transit stops at Millburn and South Orange stations, close to the eastern trailheads.

Trails aren’t always clearly marked, so carry a map. The South Mountain Conservancy sells a trail guide and waterproof map, and free Lenape Trail maps are available from the NY-NJ Trail Conference.

Tips

  • Go early on weekends; Tulip Springs and the Fairy Trail area get busy.
  • Wear grippy shoes: rocky and rooty sections near the falls are slippery.
  • Keep dogs on a lead and follow posted county rules.
  • In autumn, the ridge and river trails are excellent for foliage.
