Quick answer: if you only have energy for one, climb Kala Patthar (about 5,545 m / 18,192 ft). It’s the best place on the trek to see Everest’s summit, especially at sunrise. Everest Base Camp (about 5,364 m / 17,598 ft) is the trek’s famous goal and a moving place to stand, but you can’t actually see Everest’s summit from it. Most trekkers do both: Base Camp in the afternoon, Kala Patthar the next morning.

Why you can’t see the summit from Base Camp
Base Camp sits at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall, tucked under the walls of Nuptse and the West Shoulder. These ridges block the view of Everest’s summit. Kala Patthar, a rocky hill on the slopes of Pumori, is high enough and far enough away to look over them and straight at the summit pyramid.
How to do both
- Option 1 (most common): trek Lobuche → Gorak Shep in the morning, visit Base Camp in the afternoon, then climb Kala Patthar for sunrise the next day before descending.
- Option 2: climb Kala Patthar for sunset on arrival day, then visit Base Camp the next morning. Sunset light on Everest can be spectacular, but the afternoon is often cloudier.
- Either way, see our 12-day EBC itinerary for how it fits together.
Tips for the Kala Patthar climb
- Start around 4–5 am for sunrise, with a headlamp and every warm layer you have.
- The trail is steep and the air is thin; go slowly and take breaks.
- Keep your phone and camera batteries warm inside your jacket.
- Turn back if you have a severe headache, confusion or breathlessness at rest.
- Bring water in an insulated bottle so it doesn’t freeze.
